Travellers are missing the sense of adventure and excitement offered by overseas breaks, an industry expert has claimed.
Sharron Livingston, editor of thetravelmagazine.net, was commenting on the rise of domestic holidays, or 'staycations', during the economic downturn.
She said that while breaks in the UK have become popular, people are still eager to broaden their horizons by going abroad.
"Having been spoilt in recent years with easy access to previously unheard of places . travellers are missing the adventure of travelling abroad during the recession," Ms Livingston said.
She also commented on some of the trends that have emerged in the current financial climate, pointing out that ferry travel and cruises have "seen an upturn".
People planning to take an overseas break this year can take
ferries from Portsmouth to Santander with
Brittany Ferries, which also sails to the Spanish port from Plymouth.
Ms Livingston revealed that Spain is traditionally seen as offering good value for money, which is a "very important factor" for travellers.
Other options for holidaymakers looking beyond the UK include
Stena Line's
ferries from Harwich to Hook of Holland and
LD Lines' Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry route.
