Holidaymakers planning to take ferries to Spain this year could enjoy a more fulfilling break if they seek out new experiences, it has been suggested.
People who appreciate the relaxed nature of travelling by sea can reach the destination via
Brittany Ferries' Santander ferry routes from Portsmouth and Plymouth.
Carmen Hernandez Gomez, a market analyst at the Spanish Tourism Office, pointed out that Spain has become so established as a holiday destination that many people think there is nothing new to discover in the country.
Those who visit with an open mind and are willing to get out and meet local people will find that there are plenty of novel experiences on offer, according to Ms Gomez.
"Even if you have been to a place many, many times, there is probably a lot about it that you don't know yet," she said.
"Go there with an open mind and ask the locals what to do, don't just stay in the hotel."
Travellers taking ferries to Spain in the future could see the benefit of a campaign by the national tourist board to raise the profile of the country's food and compete with more established culinary hotspots such as France and Italy.
Another sea travel option for people coming from the UK is P&O Ferries' Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry route, which will operate until September.
