UK breaks 'will always be popular' | | | | 02 October 2008 | There will "always be a market" for domestic holidays in and around the UK, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito).
Derek Moore, chairman of the organisation, said that this is particularly true at the moment, with domestic trips in Britain "holding up" despite the problems in the economy.
He also said that people are still taking weekend breaks, to destinations both within the UK and abroad.
"There will always be a market for domestic holidays and there are some great cities in the UK, great places to visit from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Liverpool and Manchester," Mr Moore added.
"There are lots of great weekend opportunities as well."
Some of the top city break destinations in the UK and Ireland, such as Dublin and Belfast, can be reached via ferry crossings, while people looking to explore the northern reaches of Britain can catch ferries to Lerwick from Aberdeen.
According to figures from VisitBritain, there were 11.9 million overnight trips made in the UK by UK residents in May 2008. |
