Catching
ferries from Portsmouth to Santander is quite a remarkable experience, especially as guests are often treated to appearances by marine wildlife.
The ferry route to northern Spain is popular with dolphins, which travellers regularly see during their crossing.
On a less frequent basis, whales have been spotted around the vessels, with Pilot Whales generally the most common species sighted by passengers.
Brittany Ferries has made an effort to teach its customers more about the wildlife they might encounter by offering the services of researchers from whale and dolphin conservation charity Orca.
The good cause hopes to raise people's awareness of the species and therefore boost conservation efforts that are so crucial to their survival.
Director of Orca Sally Hamilton told the Independent: "Brittany Ferries has played an important role in helping the United Kingdom's government to meet its obligations under the EU Habitats Directive as part of the development of a European network of marine protected areas."
