There may be more people boarding ferries from Portsmouth to Santander
this summer because of the miserable summer weather back home.
A survey by satnav firm TomTom has found only 21 per cent of Britons will spend their summers in the UK on 'staycation', compared with 26 per cent last year.
The study found that a range of factors have made more people want to venture abroad, including over-exposure to sport as the Olympics approaches, as well as the poor weather suffered so far this summer.
A spokesman for Tom Tom said: "A lot of those who gave up their summer holidays last year and ended up in British drizzle are not prepared to do the same this year, it seems."
The poll was carried out by YouGov and a different survey by the same organisation for travel technology firm Amadeus recently showed a fifth of Londoners want a holiday getaway when the Olympics comes to town.
