Wexford Opera Festival to begin next month | | | | 25 September 2008 | From October 16th British holidaymakers will have the opportunity to catch ferries to Ireland and enjoy some culture at the 57th Wexford Opera Festival.
One of the highlights of this year's festival will be the Rimsky-Korsakov opera Snegurochka, or The Snow Maiden, which will open the programme and be staged six times between October 16th and 31st.
This work is based on a springtime fairytale and is full of genuine Russian folk melodies.
David Agler, the festival's artistic director, said: "The choice of Snegurochka to the main stage gives us an opportunity to introduce audiences to a masterpiece very rarely performed outside Russia."
Visitors will also be able to see Richard Rodney Bennett's The Mines of Sulphur and Carlo Pedrotti's Tutti in Maschera at Wexford Opera House between October 16th and November 2nd.
At the Dun Mhuire Theatre, audiences will be treated to productions of Suor Angelica, one of the three pieces that make up Puccini's famous Trittico, and Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino.
County Wexford can be reached via ferry crossings to Rosslare. Irish Ferries sails to the port from Pembroke while Stena Line offers a service from Fishguard. |
