Wightlink has revealed that it is expecting high demand from families for its Isle of Wight ferry services this summer as the 'staycation' trend continues to prove popular.
The company said that many of the island's self-catering barns and cottages saw strong early bookings between January and March for summer breaks, a trend which has been followed by a spate of late reservations recently for the months of May and June.
People heading to the Isle of Wight have the option of taking
ferries from Lymington to Yarmouth with Wightlink.
Niton Barns, an award-winning accommodation complex in the south of the island, reported that its bookings for the year to date are 51 per cent higher than in 2009, while Mersley Farm is already fully booked for August.
Kerry Jackson, Wightlink's marketing manager, said: "Island accommodation providers have told us that they still have late availability in May and we have certainly seen the same pattern for ferry crossings.
"It looks to us like a 'wait and see' market for people who do not have to travel with children in the school holidays. This could mean some great bargains for holidaymakers who are flexible about travel dates in the coming months."
The company also operates
ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
