Palau is one of the most spectacular seaside towns in Gallura. The area is characterised by lush green vegetation and clear waters in secluded bays. Palau really is like a paradise on earth. Palau's artistically shaped coastlines are sculpted by the wind that has, over generations, produced many interesting rock forms. The most famous is that of dell'Orso which is shaped like a bear.
Palau began to become known as a tourist destination only at the beginning of the sixties. The most important founder who introduced this part of Sardinia to the rest of the world was the Spanish Earl Rafael Neville who created the tourist village of Porto Rafael. A resort with houses in typical Mediterranean style built to be in harmony with the surroundings. Today, Palau is popular with tourists but still remote and unknown enough to be the perfect spot to get away from the stress and strains of daily life.
