Pola Ferry Port Overview
Pola Ferry Port is situated close to the centre of the town and acts as a gateway between Croatia and Italy with ferries sailing from Pola to Venice.
Pola, or Pula, is situated near the base of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia and is thought to date from between 47 and 44 B.C. Pula is the largest city in Istria. Like the rest of the region, Pola is known for its mild climate, tame sea, and unspoiled nature. The city is well-known for its wine making, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Pola, along with the surrounding area, has many beautiful beaches and is a popular destination with tourists.
Pola is home to one of the most famous sights in the whole of Croatia, the Roman amphitheatre which dates from the end of the 1st century B.C. The city is well-known for its surviving Roman buildings, including the 1st century A.D. Arch of the Sergii and temple of Rome and Augustus. Other historical sites in Pola include the 2nd century Twin Gates (Porta Gemina) and the Gate of Hercules, which dates from the 1st century.
The city's old quarter is characterised by narrow streets, and Medieval and Renaissance buildings. The old quarter is home to the Byzantine chapel of St. Mary Formosa and the 13th century church of St. Francis. In Pola's old town you can also find the Venetian castle, which houses the Historical Museum of Istria.
There is plenty to see and do in Pola, much of it revolving around the city's historical and cultural wealth. The Archaeological Museum of Istria can be found close to the Twin Gates and has an excellent collection of treasures from Pola and the surrounding area, from prehistory until the middle ages.
