Rethymnon is the capital of Rethymno Prefecture in the island of Crete, Greece. It was built on the site of ancient Rithymna. Ancient Rithymna was founded by the Minoans, as the finds of a cemetery of the Late Minoan period show.
The old town of Rethymnon is one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance. Rethymnon has a Venetian castle called the Fortetza which is the one of the best standing castles in Greece. Other monuments include the Neratze mosque (St. Katherine's Catholic Church), the Great Gate (megali porta, Porta Guerra), the Piazza Rimondi (Rimmondi square).
The Prefecture of Rethymnon is known for its breathtaking nature. You will find beautiful beaches along both its northern and southern coasts. If you stay in Rethymnon town you visit the beaches close the the capital.
