Rotterdam Europoort Ferry Port Overview
Rotterdam is the largest city in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands and the second largest municipality in the Netherlands after the capital Amsterdam. The Rotterdam port and industrial complex fulfils an important role as a hub for international goods flows and as a business location for industry and logistic services.
Rotterdam Ferry Port is the largest port in Europe and was the world's busiest port until 2004 when it was overtaken by Shanghai. Rotterdam Europoort is located on the North Sea on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas. Rotterdam Ferry Port covers an area of 40 kilometres, from the center of the city to the North Sea.
Rotterdam was founded in the mid 13th century as a small fishing village. The name Rotterdam has been derived from a dam in the Rotte river. At the beginning of the Second World War almost the entire city centre was heavily damaged by German raids. This explains why hardly any pre-war buildings have remained in this part of Rotterdam.
Rotterdam has many interesting museums as there is the well known the Boijmans-van Beuningen Museum, the Historisch Museum (Historical museum) and the Kunsthal a center for contemporary art. A visit to Rotterdam isn't complete without a visit to the Euromast, the highest lookout tower in the Netherlands or a boat excursion over the Nieuwe Maas and the Lek Rivers.
