About Algeciras

Algeciras is a major port city in southern Spain in the Bay of Gibraltar. It links Spain with Africa and is one of the largest ports in Europe. Over 3,5 Million passengers and more than 600,000 vehicles use the port every year and the maritime station is vast with an area of over 19.000 m2.

In the port area there are many Moroccan's in transit, particularly during July and August when migrant workers return home for their holidays from their work in France, Holland and Belgium. As a consequence, there is a strong Arab influence here with many of the signs in Arabic as well as Spanish while, in the backstreets, you can find several traditional tea shops which specialize in the traditional Moroccan mint tea.

With many daily sailings and very short journey times, Algeciras is the port to use if you want to travel between southern Europe and North Africa. Several different routes are available for you to use and AFerry allows you to compare them all and find the best priced deal.

    Confused first time traveller
    • I wasn't aware of the need to travel from Tanger Med Port rather than the FRS Ferry office in Tanger. The Tanger Med FRS office is not listed on Google maps. We had to drive more than 50kms to get to the Tanger Med port when we realised we were at the wrong departure point. Also, my ticket showed departure as 14-00 but it was actually 15-00 ... this however actually saved me from missing the ferry though plans on the other side were made around the original timing. There were not many passengers so I did not see that the onboard cafe etc was open hence no input on catering.

    Late late late
    • AML was late 2 hours and apparently this is a common occurrence. Nor even an apology, nothing like business as usual. The food made us both sick. STAY AWAY FROM AML. There are other choices

    Goodbye Africa, Hello Europe
    • Found the office for the ferry company easily, and tickets were produced quickly and we were on our way to departures. The boat had all we needed, with lots of announcements in 3 languages. Food was fine with a reasonable choice and the toilets were clean. Some signposting issues at the departure port, but nothing that interrupted our journey ir related to the ferry. I would use AFerry and the shipping company again.

    Easy crossing with FRS
    • Ship and facilities gave impression of cleanness and proper maintenance. Main issue with journey was that both departure and arrival were some 30mins late on Sun 28-May 13hrs Tanger-med to Algeciras. Suggest to manage traveller expectations on this point, if necessary

Spacious ship but poor time management
    • Check in was fuss free and bus provided to ferry port from the location of check in to the ferry directly. The interior of ferry was spacious and food offered was good. However, the ferry trip was delayed for 1 hour and as a result, we missed our overnight bus and had to check in to a hotel to stay the night. Hence, for future passengers, do take note that the ferry might be delayed and arrange for a contingency plan.
