The small fishing village of Arbatax is situated on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Ogliastra provence of Sardinia, 5km west of the nearest town, Tortoli, and home to a small but busy port. Arbatax is a territory rich in green Mediterranean scrub and the characteristic red rocks and masses of porphyritic granite.
Arbatax is a stunning place to be in the spring, when you can see an explosion of colours with the contrast of the rocks of the headland and the reef, the white sandy beaches and the limpid waters. A natural frame to this panorama are the surrounding mountains, the highest on the island.
Trenino Verde is a famous tourist train which takes you up the mountainous hinterland. From the light house which sits above the village you can see a breathtaking view of the village. All these beautiful surroundings and the choice of activities make Arbatax a particularly pleasant seaside resort for holiday makers.
Civitavecchia Ferry Port has access to the most important national and European road and rail networks.
Civitavecchia(meaning "ancient Town") took the brunt of the two World Wars because of its strategic importance as a Roman Port and in the due course most of the city's archaeological treasures and old buildings were destroyed.
But, some of the interesting sites that still remain are the 16th century Fort Michelangelo and the Piazza Leandra along with some interesting hot spring baths from the Roman times.

06 Aug 2015Fast boat, basic comfort, poor information
We booked a ticket online and printed the ticket. I read the information multiple times but it only mentioned the adres where to wait for the boat. No confirmations to be made (nice) but no actual timings or more instructions on the ticket. We waited a long time in Arbatax (which just had a town celebration day). At 11:20 I went to ask a police person where we had to go. He pointed us towards the correct place (no signs pointing to that point) and when we arrive we get a typical look and the remark we should have gone to the ticket office before but as an exception we got our tickets printed from a mobile unit... There was no information on the ticket nor was there anything marked saying we needed to do that!!! Anyway the boat arrived a bit later than mentioned on the ticket (after midnight) and we boarded, got our basic cabin, went for a quick look around the boat and boat an expensive coffee and a coke. A lot of people were sleeping in the sofa's all around and TV's were shouting noise ni some corners. Back to the cabine for a quick shower and the off to bed. Another expensive (but nice) croissant and a cappucino before we arrived at the mainland. This ferry is basic and fast but the level of correct information is very poor...
