About Astypalea

Astypalea is full of whitewashed houses, amazing beaches and fruit orchards bursting with tangerines, olives and grapes. Like many Greek islands, Astypalea is full of breathtaking views of the ocean and the unique landscape that surrounds the main villages of Chora and Livadi. 'The Portaitissa' is a must-see when going to this island, an immaculate monastery with whitewashed walls and turquoise domed roofs.

Also try some Astypalean specialities whilst there including poungia, a cheese pie made with locally-made kopanisti cheese and sweet Greek honey, and the freshly-caught seafood such as lobster and octopus. For archaeology fans, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Astypalea is a must, as well as the Venetian ruins that are scattered around Astypalea.

Ferries to and from Astypalea

On board Blue Star Ferries, as well as a range of cabins and seating including airline style seats, you will find an a la carte restaurant, cafe, bar, shops, internet access, ATM machine and night club. All Blue Star Ferries also now feature Goody's fast food restaurants which are Greece's equivalent of McDonalds or Burger King.

Getting to Astypalea

Although there are roads in Astypalea, many of them are only dirt roads and may be quite dangerous. Because of this, and due to the small size of the island, it may be easier to either cycle or walk to the port from wherever you are on the island.

There is a bus service on Astypalea, going from Astypalea Chora to all the other villages in Astypalea, however this service is very limited.

    A Different Experience
    • We chose the ferry as an alternative to always flying. We booked a cabin this time as we had done this 10 hour journey previously. The cabins were not ready when we came on board and when we got our cabin, sleep was difficult due to the frequent tannoy announcements and noisy children, so not really worth the money. We were told we would have help with luggage getting to our cabin, but this did not happen. No vegetarian options for sandwiches in first class lounge, which was disappointing. The return journey was more enjoyable, as this was in daylight.
