Durres is one of Albania's oldest cities and was founded as a Greek colony in 627 B.C. Since then, the city has grown and expanded while preserving monuments of the ancient city. Now Durres is the second largest and one of the most economically developed cities in Albany due to the large port that allows trading in the Adriatic Sea.

The recent construction of a motorway that links Durres with Tirana has cut down the travelling time to the capital to only 30 minutes. Tirana is also accessible by train, between Durres and Tirana there is a frequent and cheap rail service.

Durres has a Mediterranean climate that makes it a popular summer holiday destination for local and foreign tourists. Tourists can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and clear Adriatic seawater at the beaches of Durres and Currilave.

Some important buildings and museum worth visiting in Durres include the Museum of History, the Archaeological Museum, the Philharmonic orchestra, the Puppet Theatre, the Estrada Theatre as well as the Main library and The Cultural Centre with the "Aleksander Moisiu" Theatre.

As one of Albania's oldest cities, Durres also has many important historical sites, such as the Venetian Tower and the Medieval Town Walls. If you prefer being outdoors, Durres has numerous parks and flower gardens; on the hills of the city there is an open theatre too. Durres has long, beautiful beaches and nearby can be found the well-known beach resort of Durres Plazh.

    Great trip
    • A little confusing at check it, online bookings are swapped for tickets at the far end of the port (requiring bus transfer) and then check in for the boat at another terminal. A bus is taken to a 3rd terminal where the boat leaves from after passport control. The boat was very punctual departing right on time and arriving a little early in to the destination. Staff pleasant on board, didn't sample the onboard catering, only a beer or two which was well priced.

    • The ferry departed 6 hours later than scheduled. The cabin for 4 people smaller than 9 square meters, we had to sleep with the door open. The staff more than arrogants. All they care is taking your money.

    The worst ferrry experience
    • It was time to go on board the ADRIA FERRIES . We went on board with a car We couldn't even go to the stairs as cars were blocking the way. We went upstairs again chaos, people sleeping in the corridors , shouting staff etc. We found a seat and got stuck there waiting to depart for just under 3 hours delay. So yeah 3 hours delay. We werent happy as noone was explaining to us why is such a delay. I went to the Reception to find out and funny the lady told i dont have time now go to garage where the car is located and find out. Was shocking . I insisted and at the time the sort manager came and i asked her the same . She simply told me its too many cars so go as we busy. That was it. So this Adria ferries they keep lots of people waiting just so they can squeeze as much as possible. Even though i should have been looked after with meals on board up to a certain amount from the ticket back refund i just got the most arrogant attitude. Never again

    Great value ferry
    • I travelled as a foot passenger to Albania Durres 23:00-08:00. Great adventure, turn up at Bari port, get on free bus to ticket office to collect pre booked tickets, get on bus and return, go through customs then on minibus to ship. Walk on ship collect cabin key, find cabin (small and comfortable no frills). Beer in the lounge then bed. Wake up in morning on deck for a cigarette and a great view of Albania. All no problems and staff very friendly and helpful. This is a great value for money way to travel, Don't expect the ritz if your a bit posh, but for me who travels very light on foot it was great.
