About Colonia

Colonia del Sacramento (Colonia, for short) is a city in Uruguay facing Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata estuary. Colonia is just a short ferry ride from the capital city of Buenos Aires. It is a beautiful city with buildings of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial influence and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, the historic quarter (Barrio Histórico) is full of gorgeous old stone houses, cobbled streets, antique cars and is a wonderful destination all year round.

Being small and compact you can easily explore it in an afternoon, discover a rich arts and culture scene and much more. It's a great place for gift shopping and good eating with a wide selection of quaint eateries. While you are visiting do try out a chivito, which is a beef and fried egg sandwich loaded with vegetables and sauces, sold at food stands and restaurants.

    • Very safe and efficient sailing from BA to Colonnia, staff are really helpful and friendly, the ship is clean and well looked after - overall a great service, the only down point was the lack of catering on board and at the ports, but the crossing is only an hour.
