Durrës is a port city on the Adriatic Sea in western Albania, west of the capital, Tirana. The port of Durres is located in the heart of the city, which is approximately 39k from Tirana. The port of Durres is Albania's largest sea port and offers great links to Italy.
Durres is one of Albania's oldest cities and was founded as a Greek colony in 627 B.C. Since then, the city has grown and expanded while preserving monuments of the ancient city. Now Durres is the second largest and one of the most economically developed cities in Albania due to the large port that allows trading in the Adriatic Sea.
The construction of a motorway that links Durres with Tirana has cut down the travelling time to the capital to only 30 minutes. Tirana is also accessible by train, between Durres and Tirana there is a frequent and cheap rail service.
Durres has a Mediterranean climate that makes it a popular summer holiday destination for local and foreign tourists. Tourists can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and clear Adriatic seawater at the beaches of Durres and Currilave.
Some important buildings and museums worth visiting in Durres include the Museum of History, the Archaeological Museum, the Philharmonic orchestra, the Puppet Theatre, the Estrada Theatre as well as the Main library and The Cultural Centre with the "Aleksander Moisiu" Theatre.
As one of Albania's oldest cities, Durres also has many important historical sites, such as the Venetian Tower and the Medieval Town Walls. If you prefer being outdoors, Durres has numerous parks and flower gardens; on the hills of the city there is an open theatre too. Durres has long, beautiful beaches and nearby can be found the well-known beach resort of Durres Plazh.
Italy boasts a wealth of popular destinations and has something for everyone to enjoy.
Take a romantic gondola ride in Venice, see the ancient Colosseum in Rome, visit the leaning tower of Pisa, admire the many masterpieces in the Uffizi gallery of Florence or simply relax on one of the many beautiful beaches that can be found along Italy's miles of stunning coastline.
Florence is an often overlooked tourist destination. However, it is well worth a visit. The town was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and it still shows in the architecture of the city. There are many fine art galleries from famous artists - including the Galleria degli Uffizi, where you can see Boticelli's `Birth of Venus'.
The galleries themselves are often works of art, with the walls and ceiling ornately decorated with various brightly coloured murals.
