About the Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are situated off the west coast of Greece, and comprise the islands of Kefalonia, Kythira, Corfu, Zakynthos (Zante), Lefkada, Paxi and Ithaka. These beautiful Greek Islands have a rich and colourful history. The past occupation of the British and the French has given the islands a distinct feel that is quite different to the other Greek archipelagos.

The islands are famed for their clear blue waters, long beautiful sandy beaches enclosed by cliffs, quaint villages and a stunning countryside. Each Ionian island has it's very own unique charm and between them, they have everything you could possibly want from a holiday in the Greek islands. Why not try island hopping to capture the essence of each island?

Ionian Islands Travel Guide

The Greek Ionian Islands are situated off the west coast of Greece, with the exception of Kythira to the south, and comprise the islands of Corfu, Paxos (Paxi), Lefkas, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante) and Kythira, as well as numerous smaller islands

The Ionian Islands are a chain of islands that stretch along the West coast of Greece and out into the Ionian Sea. They are much greener than many Greek islands and are a tranquil place for you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas of Greece.

Travel around the Ionian Islands

The method of travel depends upon which of the islands you happen to be visiting. On most, though, it is a pretty safe bet to assume that there is the ability to rent a car. Due to the nature of the roads on some more remote parts of the islands, it always pays to get a four-wheeled drive.

Many islands also have small local buses, though times can be unpredictable. The islands have beautiful scenery, making bikes the perfect way to get around. On Zante, you can get bike tours of the islands, giving you the perfect opportunity to see things in a relaxed and exciting way.

Things to see on the Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands offer a multitude of things to see, from vast unspoilt stretches of sandy beaches to ancient monuments hidden away in a glove of lush undergrowth. Zante is also known for its endangered species of sea turtle.

When you finally find the energy and inclination to venture off your deckchair, the clear seas around the islands also offer plenty of opportunity for scuba diving. Boat trips are also a great way to see the island, and a trip to see the Blue Caves of Zante is particularly worth the effort.

Bari to Corfu with Ventouris Ferries
    • This was a very straightforward overnight. Taking sleeping mats and a sleeping bag, there is plenty of room on the deck to stretch out and get a good night's sleep in the cool of the night air. The journey time therefore feels much shorter with the sleep and in the morning the beautiful vistas of Corfu while away the time. We arrived around two hours ahead of schedule. Food on board is adequate but for countries with such culinary traditions uninspiring. It would be better to make or buy your own before arriving at Bari. Overall, the smoothness of the crossing was a welcome relief after some long driving to get to Bari.

    Quick, crowded but cheap
    • The check-in in Bari was very unorganised and took a long time, but then again the ferry was quite full. Most people decide to camp somewhere on the floor, the lounge chair I booked was initially comfortable, but then a huge family with shouting children and a dog came to sit in front of me. Thankfully I could upgrade to a cabin to get the necessary sleep during the night. A plus for the staff. The ferry is not very expensive, so overall the value for money is good.

    A difficult night
    • Not a particular good experience. Not a modern and comfortable ferry and not well organized. Awful the jingle before the arriving in the port.
