Palermo has been the capital of Sicily since long before the Ancient Greeks. It reached its cultural height during the Arab occupation, when it became known for the high quality of its mosques and palaces and their vibrant gardens, many of which are still worth a visit today. Today, it is also the home of several important wine makers.

GNV's had a monopoly here for years now and the Livorno to Palermo ferry is on a disgusting ship and puts GNV in a good light. Compared to the massive drive with fuel and accommodation and ferry and inconvenience, there's no real choice unless you love long journeys by car. You're still treated a level above steerage, and when they turf you out of your cabin you paid for an hour and a half before arrival so they can clean for the next journey, they now lay on entertainment in the lounges. Waiting around to be called to the garage can be another hour or two!! No choice but chill. I believe you can now pay 25 euro more to get priority disembarking. This is what an italian monopoly looks like (which of course exists on the other route I use from Amsterdam to Newcastle). However, GNV do not hike their prices in summer quite so outrageously.

Its great thats you can take your dog in the cabin with you and I understand the difficulties of having dogs on board but if you are travelling alone you cant leave the dogs unattended in the cabin and therefore you can do to the restaurants to get any food or drinks. Perhaps they could offer a pre-booked food service where its delivered to you cabin

12 May 2018Genova to Palermo with GNV
We had to leave our cabin 4hrs before arrival time which is outrageous. It is possible to leave it a lot later. for example, when travelling with StenaLine one leaves the cabin 30 mins before docking. This is how it should be done. Also, there is absolutely no organization in ordering the passengers how to find their garages to get into their vehicles. initially you are told where to wait, but after that it's anyone's guess where to go. Both of those issues should be addressed to make the journey from an ok one to an excellent.
