About Hydra

Being only about 37 nautical miles from Piraeus, the port that serves Athens, Hydra is a very convenient island for holidays. Despite its closeness to Athens, Hydra possesses all the charm and characteristics of a typical Greek island. The island of Hydra is located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf and is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. In ancient times the island was known as Hydrea, meaning "water" in Greek, a reference to the islands natural springs. The main town called "Hydra port" has a crescent-shaped harbour with restaurants, shops, markets and galleries that cater to tourists and locals. Hydra has good ferry links to Ermioni, Spetses, Piraeus, Poros and Porto Heli.

Ferries to and from Hydra

Hellenic Seaways is one the largest and best known of the Greek ferry operators. In addition to conventional ferries, the company also runs catamaran type vessels and fast ferries which can sometimes be up to 50% faster than other companies with conventional ferries. This means that you can island-hop and have even more time to enjoy your destination. Their ferries are modern and provide a full range of facilities on board.

Whatever route you take to or from Hydra, you are certain to have a great trip with this famous Greek ferry company.

Rude staff, no information in port area.
    • On arrival at the port area there was no information to let us know which ferry was ours - there were three boats there widely spaced out and we were running with our cases from boat to boat not knowing where to go. Once we found our boat thanks to a member of the public, we got on and found our seats but we were shouted and screamed at in Greek by a woman member of staff because we didn't know where to put our luggage (we were some of the last people to get on because although we had arrived early we hadn't known where to go to catch the boat). We had no idea what the woman meant as we don't know Greek. We were trying to do the right thing but it was the first time we had done this and we just didn't know. I truly have never in my life been screamed at like that, I felt traumatised by the experience. That horrendous female needs to either be sacked or trained in customer service. More information is needed in the port area to inform people where to go and what to do.

    An absolute pleasure
    • We are two females over 65 travelling together and were concerned as to how we would manage. Thanks to AFerry, booking was easy, train from Monastaraki to Pireus no problem and reasonably easy to find our ferry. Perhaps a little direction from station to ferry port would be a help. Facilities at the port were clean and we were assisted onto and off the Flying Dolphin. Everything was perfect. Flying Dolphin was on time and staff were very helpful. A very pleasant journey !

good service but back seats not great
    • In general, i think the service is good. However, i think the back seats that we had are not the best. You are in the very back of the boat with a strong diesel smell. If placed somewhere else, i think the boat is excellent.
