About Ancona

Ancona became one of the major ports of the Adriatic between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, second only to Venice. However, in later years Ancona, like other Italian towns, became the scene of many battles connected to the wars of independence, and was also the target of foreign occupations, including the massive air bombing campaigns during World War II, which destroyed whole areas of Ancona, and badly damaged the port.

    • You have to accept that loading and unloading takes time and that travel by ferry is time consuming. We book a cabin and slept through the night. Unloading at Ancona to a long time I think due to the port at Acona that was not built to handle the traffic particularly the heavy trucks. We will be happy to use this route again.

    Rip Off Company
    • 17 hour ferry journey with car, trailer and cabin cost around £550. Identical package on 17 hour journey from Holland to Newcastle cost £250. Greedy Greek ferry company dishing up lousy service at extortionate price.

    • What a chaotic experience! A free for all driving on to the ferry with no instruction to tell you that all passengers must board by foot, only the driver allowed in the car. Like a humanitarian rescue boat once on board, bodies lying everywhere. Well worth the extra money for a luxury cabin and on board facilities good, once you climb over people to get to them.

    Unknown delay
    • The ferry arrived at Igomenitsa about 30 minutes late and after loading left approx one hour late. However for a reason not stated it arrived at Ancona about two and half hours late. They apologised for the lateness of the ferry but gave no reason for the additional 90 minute slippage in the journey time.

    Best of a poor choice
    • Very expensive cabins make this route a necessary evil but at least Superfast boats are clean and a little quicker. Loading and unloading appalling as usual on these routes. Allow at least one hour for unloading from time of arrival.
