About Kefalonia/Poros

Poros is a harbour town in a small, protected bay on the Ionian island of Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) in western Greece, not to be confused with the Saronic island of Poros. Kefalonia, whose mountains, pine forests and sandy beaches characterize the landscape of the island, is considered one of the most beautiful Greek islands. Modern historians suspect that Kefalonia is the real home of Ulysses of Ithica and not the smaller island that bears her name today. The island of Kefalonia is the home of the film version of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" and has numerous family-friendly beaches, which are usually not overcrowded despite the island's popularity. Although many of the settlements of Kefalonia were destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, there are still a number of attractions on the island today, including the mosaic floors of the Roman villa in Skala, the Venetian castle of Assos, caves, ruins, old vineyards and lush mountain landscapes that are a magnet for the active traveller.

Kefalonia/Poros ferry port

The port of Poros is located on the southeast coast of Kefalonia and is the second largest port of the island. The port of Sami, located on the central east coast, is the busiest port on the island.
