About Mairehamn

Mariehamn was founded in 1861 as part of the Russian Empire and was named after Maria Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of the Russian King Alexander II and since then remained an autonomous region of Ă…land.

Mariehamn is a very attractive town with wide streets and green spaces with stunning displays of spring flowers everywhere. It is a small youthful town with restaurants and bars to suit every taste within walking distance from the Mariehamn Ferry Port.

The town offers a lot to explore such as the nautical museum in the ship Pommern, built in Glasgow in the 1930 or simply relax by the beach.

About Turku

Turku is the oldest and the fifth largest city in Finland. It has been the capital of Finland until 1812. Turku has always had an important place in the Finnish history. The city was totally destroyed by the great fire in 1827 but was rebuilt on either banks of the river with a new town plan under the vision of the architect C. L. Engel.

Turku is a versatile city where history and culture mix with a trendy life style seamlessly. Turku's best attraction is the river Aura and its banks. Some of the major attractions such as the city museum and art galleries are built around this river. Ett Hem museum, the Turku Castle dating back to 1280, Automobile and communications museum, Turku Cathedral (built in 1300) and the Finnish Biological museum are a few other must see places in Turku.

Turku is the centre for music and arts in Scandinavia which is evident in the number of theatres in the city.

Turku also offers a variety of restaurants and accommodation to suit everyone's taste and acts as a gateway to visit surrounding Aland Island and other Finnish cities.

Easy and comfortable journey, but cold
    • The journey with Viking Lines from Mariehamn to Turku went very well. Ship was on time, boarding was easy, enough seats to sit down and relax. It was a bit cold inside though, I don't like it when it is warm inside, but this was just a tad too cold. The food was very standard, hardly anything to eat when you avoid sugar, dairy and grains. Luckily I bought my own food. Overall I had a pleasant journey, because there was a lot of space, staff were friendly and there was a general storage in which I could store my big bag for free.

    Smooth sailing
    • Even if you are not there for the cheap booze and duty-free shopping, sailing on Silja Line is a pleasant experience :) No matter how crowded the ship is, you can always find a quiet spot to sit and read or rest.

    Doesn't go from Mariehamn
    • Check when you book that the Ferry goes from Mariehamn. Mine went from a town about 30 minutes drive away. Only found this out when I turned up to take the ferry. Apparently it is the ferries at night that do not go from Mariehamn. Had great help from the staff at Silja Mariehamn office to get over the problem.
