Oran is situated in north-west Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast, and is the capital of the Oran Province. Oran has had a colourful past, seeing occupation from the Spanish, the Ottomans and the French. Today Oran is an important commercial centre, with its international port offering many passenger and freight services.
Oran's rich history has left the city with a wealth of historical and cultural treasures, the most famous of which being the 17th century Qasr el-Bey (the Bey castle). Also well worth a visit are the Santa Cruz Spanish church, and the city's many museums and mosques.
