About Aegina

Aegina - also spelled Egina - is one of the Saronic islands. The island is close to Athens which means its a very convenient location for those that don't like long ferry journeys. You'll find a variety of hotels and taverns open throughout the year.

The island is popular with Athenians in the summer and at weekends. However, despite being close to Athens this is a typical Greek island: blue seas, small tavernas and ouzeries, cafes, fishing villages and archaeological sites await you. For history buffs, the Temple of Aphaea (a local Goddess from Aegina) is a must-see and if you're nutty for nuts, the island is famous for it's pistachios which some believe are the best in the world.

    Great Service
    • On arrival I realised that I had booked the wrong date for my crossing i.e. the previous day. I was told to go to the main office and expected to have to pay again having effectively missed my ferry. To my delight, the lady in the office just issued me with new tickets with no extra charge. This blew me away as usually there is a surcharge or new tickets to be bought which would certainly be the case with budget airlines and other carriers. Also, this problem was dealt with with no fuss which was a great relief at the time. All the ferries ran on time too and were clean and presentable. Well done Hellenic Seaways, you will be my carrier of choice in future.

    Pleasant journey with some confusion
    • Overall the journey was pleasant. Being a short 40 minute journey, there was no need for cabin staff contact. The sign posting at Pireus terminal could have been better to obviate the need to ask all and sundry as to where the office is (having reached the correct gate). The young lady manning the Port side office in Aegina on the day (30 September evening) did not know what was happening. She did not even attempt to hide her ignorance with simple courtesy either. Enquiry from her as to the time of arrival and the location where the ferry would berth in English first and later in Greek through a translator ten minutes before departure time, yielded curt and WRONG answer. Thanks to a Port Security guard, we caught the ferry back to Pireus.

    Late and bad service
    • Both rides to and from Aegina were late. I don't understand why we're told to be there 30 minutes before if the boat arrives 10 minutes later. Also, there is nobody to point out the right place to board and nobody on the hellenic seaways selling points. When checking for the tickets (by the same time a few passengers with no ticket were getting in discretely), we were told only "front section", wich can get messy because seats have numbers and passengers could get picky. I don't have a clue of what "onboard facilities" and "onboard catering" are about, the only facilities are the seats and no catering. The ride itself is quite bumpy. There was no information that the ride would stop in several islands, so if you're not paying attention, you might get somewhere else than your intended stop. If there were a next time, I would prefer to pay less and choose another service.
