About Naxos

Naxos, the largest of the Greek Cyclades islands, lies in the centre of the Aegean Sea. Naxos is a unique island that has escaped mass tourism, despite its beauty and long history. Evidence shows that man has lived on Naxos since the 4th millennium B.C.

Naxos is home to stunning scenery, from the beautiful white beaches and sand dunes covered in cedar trees, to the impressive mountains and fertile valleys further inland.

The main town of Naxos is Hora (also known as Naxos town), in the north of the island, which offers all the modern amenities you would expect from a sizeable town. Hora is home to the Ferry Port of Naxos, which is surrounded by seafront cafés and bars from which you can enjoy the view out to sea.

    Great experience
    • We have travelled on many ferries to the Greek islands over the years and this has to have been one of the best.

    Journey to Naxos
    • Positives - Clean ship with a shower. Lots of different seating areas. Negatives - Very busy ferry. Not enough seats for everyone. Ship was delayed for an hour before departing, and not much information was given about this. Food was overpriced and the options available were limited, no vegetarian or healthy options.

    Athens Piraeus to Naxos boat
    • Our ferry journey took twice the time quoted! Staff were ridiculously overzealous in seating people in exact seat no.s needlessly - plenty of space, no need to split up families (we saw many instances of). When we asked staff / management why the journey was taking double the time, they didn't care and shrugged saying this was the normal amount of time. Plus very rocky journey due to bad weather didn't help with our experience.

    Enjoyable 5 hours journey
    • We had 2 and 7 years old children with us and they managed the 5 hours journey.

    • This was an early morning ferry 7.30am. If leaving central Athens you really need approximately 1 and a 1/2 hours to get there pick up your tickets and try and find a seat as it is very overcrowded. There needs to be more indication as to where passengers who have suitcase should go. We went up the escalators with no one saying take your suitcases to the car ferry entrance. On disembarking the escalators were not working and it was very embrassing to have to drag them down the two flights with attendants just standing doing nothing. Also if you are not early to the ship it is unlikely you will find a seat. It is alright after Parous as a lot of people get of there but it is a long way to wait for a seat.
