About Syros

The largest town on Syros is Ermoupolis, to the east of the island. Ermoupolis is a popular town, with a harbour that is lined with small caf├ęs, bars and restaurants shaded by palm trees. Ermoupolis is home to the Miaouli square, which is one of the most beautiful squares in Greece. Ermoupolis also has many magnificent churches, including the Agios Nikolaos and Metamorphosis churches. Things to do in Ermoupolis include visiting the Archaeological Museum.

The town of Ano Syros is the island's second town. Ano Syros was built by the Venetians at the beginning of the 13th century and maintains a medieval atmosphere with narrow streets and marble steps.

Syros also has many beautiful beaches; the beaches of Magas Gialos and Galissas are particularly popular.

    • Really enjoyed the voyage to Syros. Bars and restaurants were excellent and the crew too. Shopping facilities were not great, perhaps the shipping line would look into that too. Shall definately return to you.

Great ferry crossing with Blue Star
    • We had a good crossing from Piraeus to Athens, were very impressed with the whole operation - very organised and punctual. We used Blue Star a number of times on this trip and were very happy with them, would definitely recommend.

    Across the Agean
    • The crossing from Piraeus to Ermopoli on Syros takes about four hours. There was a prompt departure at 7.30 am and there were no issues or problems during the journey. In August, sitting outside on the rear deck (in economy) is a pleasant experience (you can pay more and sit inside in air-conditioned seating, but why bother). The catering is of the snack variety but perfectly OK and the staff were helpful and polite, as most Greeks are. Obviously this isn't nearly as quick as flying, but it's a lot cheaper and a good holiday experience - and pretty good value for money.
