About Salerno

Salerno is a town in the Italian region of in Campania, on the Amalfi coast. Salerno benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate and is one of the sunniest town in Italy.

Salerno was founded as a Roman colony in 194 B.C. and has throughout history been occupied by the Goths, Byzantines, Langobards and the Normans. Today Salerno is the principal town of the Amalfi coast, and is a lively port town with plenty to see and do.

Salerno has many beautiful sights and attractions to keep visitors entertained. The town is overlooked by the Castello di Arechi and its beautiful Giardino della Minerva. The city's old town is also well worth a visit; it has become one of the best-preserved historic town centres, and is full of narrow streets and hidden passageways.

Salerno is well-known for its historic and grand churches; you can find plenty of marvellous examples of fine architecture and art within the churches of Salerno. The Salerno cathedral dominates the town, and is a popular tourist attraction. Situated in Salerno old town, the cathedral has a bell-tower and is the resting place of St. Matthew the Evangelist. Another church worth visiting is the Chiesa di San Giorgio, a beautiful Baroque church with many famous paintings and frescoes. To see further examples of religious art, visit the Museo Diocesano di Salerno, located close to the cathedral.

Other attractions include the city's fine selection of museums, from the Archaeological Museum with its famous head of Apollo, to the Museo Didattico della Scuola Medica Salernitana, which houses many important documents from the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first university of medicine founded in Salerno in the 9th century.

About Catania

The affects of which have been felt by Catania several times over the years. The distinct dark grey volcanic rocks used in the construction of many buildings represent this fact.

Catania was rebuilt gradually over the years after it was completely destroyed due to a violent earth quake in 1169. Catania was initially part of the Roman empire but was later taken over by the Greeks. However, most of Catania's grand palaces and wide streets were built in the 18th century when noble families from across the eastern Sicily began to flock to Catania.

Catania features many Baroque buildings and churches along with a number of Roman theatres, Piazzas and beautiful palaces. Catania with its black and white buildings offers a magnificent effect. Better than expected
    • I'd read a lot of negative reviews, so was fearing the worst. On arrival, as a foot passenger, you are allowed to enter the port 3 hours prior to departure. Outside the port gates, there is a small cafe, but nothing else, so don't arrive any earlier. Once through the gate, a bus takes you to check in, then onto the ferry. The cabins are fine. The food in the restaurant looked poor and was overpriced, so I didn't bother. There is a small snack bar selling sandwiches, toasties etc, at a very reasonable price. I booked a cabin, glad I did, the people with deck space or Pullman seats didn't look comfortable.
