About Split

Split, or Spalato in Italian, is the largest and most important city in Dalmatia and the second largest city in Croatia. Split is situated on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. Split is also known as one of the centres of Croatian culture. Split benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate and is one of the sunniest places in Europe, attracting many visitors and making the city a popular tourist destination.

Split is one of the oldest cities in the area, dating back more than 1700 years, and has many historical sites. The old town of Split dates back to Medieval times, and is home to many of Split's attractions, such as Diocletian's palace. The historic centre of Split is listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

There are many interesting museums in Split, including the Museum of Croatian Archaeological monuments, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of Maritime History. Split is also home to many art galleries such as the Mestrovic Gallery. Also worth visiting is the Marjan Forest Park, which comprises beautiful parkland, scenic paths, playgrounds and the Split zoo.

About Ancona

Ancona became one of the major ports of the Adriatic between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, second only to Venice. However, in later years Ancona, like other Italian towns, became the scene of many battles connected to the wars of independence, and was also the target of foreign occupations, including the massive air bombing campaigns during World War II, which destroyed whole areas of Ancona, and badly damaged the port.

    What a total mess!
    • After getting to the port earlier than the 2 hours they need to board people we endured 3.5 hours of torture in the baking sun waiting for the most laughable staff to sort their lives out. The ferry we sailed on was launched in 1980 and I believe sill carried most of the decor. The food was a bland sludge lasagne. If you have travelled with the likes of PandO I now see them as the finest ships and cuisine you can imagine. The shear hopelessness of waiting hour after hour on the quayside in the hot sun watching barely alive staff trying to get us onboard for more than 3 hours of misery is something that will not be forgot in a hurry. And as you can tell, it left 45 minutes late! Oh, and the shower in the room also had a blocked plughole from the paint that had fell off the decaying walls of the cubicle.

    SNAV Split - Ancona
    • The cabin was dirty, ( coffee stains, crumbs, sweet wrappers) and I needed to clean all surfaces before use. The bathroom was particularly unhygienic. The staff were fine, food mediocre and the in advance food ticket not good value. Not clear what was included, we paid for 3 people in advance, only 2 went to the cafe and still needed to pay extra for drinks. We were also not aware that the ferry called in to Dubrovnik on the way, this was not a problem but would have been good to know in advance. Only 2 small, very expensive shops on board.

    • Check in was a chaos in Split. No order. No service what so ever. Cabins on boat was ok but that's it. Food terrible and over priced. Same chaos leaving boat on Ancona. Would I go again? Hardly
