About St Petersburg
In short, it's a city with a beating heart, a vibrant history and an integral future in modern Russia. Very different in character from Moscow, the city is known for being modern, progressive and cool, featuring great shopping and nightlife to complement the wide range of historic sites. Today, it makes a great entry port into exploring Russia further, with St Peter Line offering sailings to St Peter Line from Helsinki in Finland.
Owing to Peter the Great's passion for boats and sailing, the city is perfectly served for ferry services, and recent visa regulation relaxations have made it even more attractive for tourists. One site definitely worth seeing is the Winter Palace - legend has it that Russian citizens walking past the front of the Winter Palace during the reign of the Peter the Great were in constant danger of being pulled from the street in order to be subjects for the enthusiastic though somewhat over confident Tsar's amateur dentistry experiments. Visitors to the capital will be relieved to discover that this is no longer a danger they face.
Stockholm, Sweden's capital, is made up of 14 small islands, each distinct in character and mood; from the upmarket Östermalm and the bohemian Södermalm to the historic Gamla Stan. Stockholm is often referred to as the `Venice of the North', with its pretty islands and 52 connecting bridges. Stockholm is also considered to be the capital of Scandinavia, and is a popular tourist destination offering visitors beautiful landscape, stylish boutiques, stunning art galleries and much more.
Stockholm offers its visitors an array of exciting things to see and do. Museums include the Skansen open-air museum of Swedish life and culture, with historic buildings, working farms, a zoo and an aquarium. There is a vast number of walking tours and excursions to enjoy in Stockholm, and many important buildings to visit. The Royal Djurgarden park is an island consisting of beautiful parkland and forest, and the Old Town of Stockholm offers the Drottningholm Palace, which is the home of the Swedish Royal Family; and the remains of the Viking settlement, Birka. History lovers can take a guided city tour, which is offered in many different languages.
There is also plenty for younger visitors to do in Stockholm, from the Junibacken park, the wonderful world of master story-teller Astrid Lindgren, to attractions such as the Museum of Music, the Toy Museum and Skansen's Aquarium.
31 Jan 2014The last segment of a long journey
The St. Peter's Line from St. Petersburg to Stockholm was the last segment of a trip all on ground that began in Singapore. While our train travel was great, our upgraded cabin on the Ferry was a peaceful and luxurious end. As English speakers, we didn't get the service from the Russian speaking staff that was given to the native Russian speakers. I'm sure that we missed out on some features of the ship, but it really didn't matter. It was a great trip, a wonderful stopover in Helsinki, and a trip I've already recomended to others.
