About Stari Grad
Stari Grad, or Pharos, is the oldest town in Croatia, dating from 384 B.C., and can be found on the Northern part of the island of Hvar, on Croatia's Dalmatia coast. Stari Grad's beautiful location combines superb beaches with mountainous terrain, making Stari Grad a popular location with climbers and beach enthusiasts alike.
Stari Grad's ancient roots have left the town with a wealth of historical and cultural attractions that all will enjoy; you can visit remains from the Roman and Early Christian period, such as the remains of the villa rustica at Pod Dolom and the baptistery beside the medieval church of St. Ivan. Another place worth visiting is the fortified Dominican monastery with is home to an excellent collection of documents, books, paintings, stone monuments and fossils.
Stari Grad, which literally means `old town', has much to offer the visitor, from restaurants serving local food, to sports such as tennis, beach volleyball, miniature golf and water sports. Stari Grad also has frequent cultural shows and events.
Ancona became one of the major ports of the Adriatic between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, second only to Venice. However, in later years Ancona, like other Italian towns, became the scene of many battles connected to the wars of independence, and was also the target of foreign occupations, including the massive air bombing campaigns during World War II, which destroyed whole areas of Ancona, and badly damaged the port.
11 Sep 2017Slow check-in, scary conditions
Certainly the most disorganised ferry travel in my experience. Crazy car lines to wait for ferry port access. Checkin at Stari Grad is really slow, as Croatian border posts leave you stuck in line on the tarmac for easily one hour, of course only one officer on duty. On board we had an outside cabin (luxury) with a non-functioning toilet and a non-locking door. Communal toilets had 20 people waiting in line... Not easy to exit either, before exiting all passengers were stuck in scarily tight stairwells. I wonder how they ever passed fire and safety rules. Eventually Italian border post was also really slow. Certainly never again.
