About Ullapool

It took a couple more decades for the long distance fishing fleets from eastern Scotland and beyond to discover Ullapool's benefits as a safe anchorage on the western side of the country. Since then, though the fortunes of the Scottish fishing fleet have ebbed and flowed, fishing has remained at the heart of the economy of the town. A particular feature over many years has been the use of Loch Broom by factory ships sailing from Russia and Eastern Europe, which added a very cosmopolitan air to the town.

Ullapool offers some very nice pubs, including the Ferry Boat Inn. It also has a range of shops from the smallest right up to a well-stocked supermarket.

Ullapool is the main terminus for the ferry to Stornoway, so the MV Isle of Lewis is a frequent visitor. The ferry port offices have recently moved to the attractive new building on the pier.

About Stornoway

Stornoway is the largest town in Scotland's Western Isles, the Outer Hebrides. The Stornoway ferry port has cargo facilities, a fishing fleet, and a ferry terminal between the Isle of Lewis and the village of Ullapool on the Scottish mainland.

The fishing port of Stornoway, the only town in the Outer Hebrides, is the islands' commercial centre and offers more services and facilities than you might expect in any town of comparable size. It has an excellent range of banks, shops, hotels, guesthouses, pubs and restaurants, garages, sports facilities, an airport and ferry terminal.

The port is at the heart of the town, in fact the shape of the town is defined by the harbour, which partially encircles it. A good place for cheap snacks and light lunches is the cafe at the Ann Lanntair Gallery. A number of the streets in the centre are pedestrianised, which provides good access to an interesting range of shops.

    Bracing myself for mainland!
    • I admire the way the team manage the vehicles so quickly and efficiently and I would have no hesitation in booking another ferry crossing. It all seems to operate like clock-work, obviously years of experience is being passed-on to the younger folk and long may it continue.
