The Romans called the island of Ventotene Pandataria. It was the place of exile for the banished daughter of emperor August, Julia the Elder in 2 BC, as reaction to her excessive adultery, and of Agrippina the elder, grand-niece of Tiberius, in 29 AD.
Ventotene is more suited to those looking for some serious peace and solitude. In the small village and around the roman harbour you will find colourful houses and on the promenade several bars, restaurants and pizzerias.
Terracina is a town on the west coast of Italy. It is only a 35 mile drive from Rome, and would make a great day trip or town to stop at during a tour of Italy. The town is very charming and has a lot of history and Roman architecture. The roads are narrow and made of cobblestone, there are ruins of a mosaic-covered Capitolium, the town hall, a cathedral, a Roman temple and many more ruins to explore.
It also has a fantastic beach along the whole town. Although popular, due to the size of the beach you shouldn't find it too crowded. From the town you will also have the best view of Mount Circeo - a jagged rock formation rising out of the sea. Many visitors like to watch the sunrise over Mount Circeo, as it offers a breathtaking view.
